چکیده

Bayley and Conway’s 1964 paper [1], motivated by shortcomings in industrial design methods and understanding, was one of the first investigations of flow and heat transfer in turbomachinery rotating disc cavities. At the time of the study, a theoretical or numerical treatment was considered intractable and so experiments were undertaken. These paved the way for a large body of further research in this area. Today, use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in industry for internal air flow prediction is now commonplace. In this review of Bayley and Conway’s paper it is shown that the unshrouded disc cavity flow considered is still challenging for modern CFD methods, and so the experimental data remains of interest to researchers in the field.

CFD for Turbomachinery Internal Air Systems

Considerable progress in development and application of CFD for aeroengine internal flow systems has been made in recent years. CFD is regularly used in industry for assessment of air systems, and the performance of CFD for basic axisymmetric rotor/rotor and stator/rotor disc cavities with radial throughflow is largely understood and documented. Incorporation of three dimensional (3D) geometric...

Automated Hex Meshing for Turbomachinery Secondary Air System

In this paper, we present a novel process of creating hexahedral meshes for the turbomachinery secondary air system. The meshing process is automated from the geometry import to the mesh setup and requires minimum human interventions. The core of the process is a hexahedral meshing algorithm with a boundary layer mesh automatically created. The hex meshing algorithm combines the pave-sweep, gen...

Turbomachinery computational fluid dynamics: asymptotes and paradigm shifts.

This paper reviews the development of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) specifically for turbomachinery simulations and with a particular focus on application to problems with complex geometry. The review is structured by considering this development as a series of paradigm shifts, followed by asymptotes. The original S1-S2 blade-blade-throughflow model is briefly described, followed by the de...

Air-fuel Mixture Preparation for Internal Combustion Engines:Optical Techniques for Diagnosis of the Spray Developments

Nobody escapes the importance of the air/fuel mixture preparation in internal combustion engines, whatever is the thermodynamic cycle they work on and the adopted fuel. The short time between the fueling and the start of the combustion is crucial for the best mixture formation and its burning for energy optimization and the pollutant production. The always stringent vehicle emissions rules led ...
